But does Westside Strong have the right ingredients, at the right doses, to make an impact?  Let’s take a look…

Westside Strong Ingredients

The first thing you’ll notice about the Supplement Facts panel of Westside Strong is that it’s pretty simple.  Clearly this is no-nonsense brand.  To us, this is a refreshing change to the 20 ingredient pre-workouts with 10 useless ingredients…but that’s just us.  Let’s see what Westside Strong has to offer…

Citrulline Malate

Citrulline is a precursor to the amino acid Arginine which is directly involved in Nitric Oxide production.  Supplemental Arginine is actually ineffective, the research indicates, but Citrulline is quite effective.

Additionally, Citrulline can reduce the amount of Ammonia build-up in muscle tissue during exercise, effectively increasing muscular endurance.  In studies, Citrulline Malate (Citrulline + Malic Acid) has been shown to reduce muscular fatigue and allow subjects to get more reps of a given weight.

Citrulline Malate is the most reliable form of Citrulline, as it has been used in the majority of the studies pertaining to exercise enhancement.  Westside Strong contains


Beta-Alanine is the rate limiting amino acid in the synthesis of Carnosine, a dipeptide (Beta-Alanine + Histidine), higher muscular concentrations of which are associated with better muscular endurance.

Study after study has demonstrated that Beta-Alanine supplementation increases muscle Carnosine levels to the point of enhanced muscular endurance.  It’s quite reliable, but needs to be supplemented with on a daily basis or at high doses on training days.  3-6g daily is the ideal “clinical range” but 1.6g is the lowest daily dose still shown to increase Carnosine levels over time…it just takes longer.

Caffeine Anhydrous

Caffeine consumption triggers the release of neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) which increase alertness, focus, and perceived energy levels.  Caffeine is one of the few stimulants that has actually been studied enough to conclude that it is absolutely safe when taken in reasonable dosages.

Westside Strong contains 275mg of Caffeine Anhydrous, but also contains alternate form of Caffeine, Caffeine Citrate and DiCaffeine Malate, at 60mg and 30mg respectively.  This brings the total pure Caffeine content to about 300mg, a potent but reasonable dose by most people’s standards.


Tyrosine is an amino acid which serves as a precursor to Dopamine and Noradrenaline.  These two neurotransmitters control things like mood, focus, perceived energy, and pain perception, so increasing them during exercise is ideal.  You’ll push harder and go longer, leaeding to better workouts, which ultimately lead to great gains.

Unfortunately, Tyrosine does not increase levels of these neurotransmitters outright.  Instead, it simply serves as substrate for their production when they become depleted.  Therefore, Tyrosine does offer some benefits for those who are engaged in rigorous, mentally and physically demanding training sessions.

Westside Strong contains 150mg of Acetyl-L-Tyrosine, a form of Tyrosine that is allegedly more bioavailable than L-Tyrosine.


Bioperine is a patented form of Black Pepper Extract standardized for the active component, Pipperine.  It has been shown to enhance the absorption of other nutrients, making it something of an insurance policy for pre-workout supplements.  It simply helps to ensure optimal absorption of all ingredients.

The Westside Strong ingredient profile is basic, but solid.  It contains more or less clinical doses of all key ingredients and contains no unnecessary pseudo-scientific ingredients.  Sticking to the basics is sometimes the best way to avoid getting ripped off…

If you can tolerate 300mg of Caffeine, you’ll be fine.  If that’s too much, start off with half a scoop or use another pre-workout with less Caffeine.

Westside Strong utilizes a basic essentials approach that is actaully a refreshing change.  Ever since Pre JYM came out, supplement companies just try to cram as many different ingredients in their pre-workout as possible and call it the best.  There’s little regard for scientific research and usually these products just end up half sucking and over-priced.
