Neon Sport Thermo Rev Review

Thermo Rev is the fifth addition to the Neon Sport (makers of Cellucor) line. It contains a variety of stimulant and non-stimulant ingredients, but the majority of the effifacy can be attributed to a few potent stimulants…

Neon Sport Thermo Rev

Gotu Kola

Gotu Kola is an Ayurvedic herb which has traditionally been used as a cognitive enhancement agent. A 2005 study, published in “Physiology and Behavior”, found that mice given 200mg/kg of Gotu Kola extract daily for 15 days were able to better navigate in a series of maze test (enhanced memory). These results were replicated in a 2007 study from “Neurosciences”.

Neon Sport does not disclose the amount of Gotu Kola present in Thermo Rev but, given that no “optimal dose” has been established for humans at this time, it would be difficult to interpret the efficacy regardless.

Caffeine is by far the most common ingredient among stimulant-based fat-burners because it triggers the release of Noradrenaline, a potent activator of lipolysis.

Caffeine certainly has pro-fat-loss mechanisms but the effects tend to fade with prolonged use, rendering caffeine ineffective as a long-term weight loss solution on its own. However, when paired with other fat-burning stimulants, Caffeine can kick-start the fat-burning process.

Unfortunately, Neon Sport doesn’t list the amount of Caffeine in Thermo Rev, leaving some guesswork to be done. Given that it’s the second ingredient in a 420mg proprietary blend, we’d estimate no more than 200mg but it’s probably more like 100-150mg. This dose would be similar to that of Neon Sport’s pre-workout, Volt.

Theobromine remains under-researched, especially with regards to fat-burning potential. Preliminary research indicates that Theobromine is a cardiac stimulant, but does not appear to have any potent psychoactive properties.

In the context of Thermo Rev, Theobromine may contribute somewhat to weight-loss, but we wouldn’t consider it a key ingredient.

Advantra Z

Advantra Z is a patented form of Bitter Orange Extract which is standardized for Synephrine, although Neon Sport doesn’t disclose the amount of Synephrine in Thermo Rev. Synephrine acts as a beta-receptor agonist, directly inducing lipolysis and allowing for more fat-burning than would otherwise normally occur.

A 2011 study, published in the “International Journal of Medicinal Sciences”, found that supplementation of 50mg Syneprhine increased the metabolic rate in human subjects without affecting blood pressure or heart rate.

As mentioned above, Neon Sport does not disclose the amount of Synephrine in Thermo Rev, but we’d estimate it’s no more than 20mg or so, a perfectly safe dose, but potentially still effective.

Yohimbine Bark

Yohimbe Bark is standardized for Yohimbine, which is an alpha(2) receptor antagonist, meaning it inhibits the receptor responsible for blocking lipolysis (breakdown of fat). By blocking the action of this receptor Yohimbine allows for more lipolysis than would otherwise be possible from exercise.

A 2006 study, published in “Research in Sports Medicine”, found that Yohimbine supplementation (20mg/day) induced relatively significant fat loss in athletes (soccer players), but had no influence on measures of exercise performance.

Although Neon Sport does not disclose the amount of Yohimbine in Thermo Rev, it generally only takes a few mg for noticeable results, especially when combined with other stimulants, so under-dosing is not an issue here.

Rauwolfia Vomitoria

Ruawolfia Vomitoria is standardized for Rauwolscine (alpha-Yohimbine) which is a close chemical relative of Yohimbine. In the context of Thermo Rev, its function is basically the same, although the psychoactive effects (perceived energy, improved mood, focus, etc.) may be more potent than Yohimbine.

Again, we don’t know the dose of Rauwolscine but even 1mg would be effective so, in the context of Thermo Rev, we aren’t worried about under-dosing.

Olive Leaf Extract

Olea europaea leaf, otherwise known as Olive leaf extract, contains a compound called Oleuropein.

A 2008 study from “The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry” demonstrated increased Noradrenaline and Adrenaline levels in rats following injection of Olive leaf extract, and this effect was primarily attributed to Oleuropein.

Similar findings were noted in a 2013 study published in “The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry” in which rats fed a diet high in Oleuropein experienced significantly increased Noradrenaline levels (measured by urine), though it’s worth mentioning that this was not accompanied by the usual decrease in weight.

The true weight-loss implications of Oleuropein are not well-understood at this time, but the psychoactive effects are pretty clear. At the very least, Oleuropein helps to enhance the focus/mood/energy profile of Thermo Rev and may help burn additional fat as well.

Phosphatidylcholine is a phospholipid containing Choline which is generally standardized from Soy. In the context of Thermo Rev, Phosphatidylcholine is meant to support brain function, and given the right dose, it might. However, since the Neuro-Rev Matrix is only 224mg, the amount of Phosphatidylcholine is likely pretty negligible.

Capsimax is a brand name for Red Pepper Extract which is standardized for certain key bioactives. Though commonly standardized for Capsaicin content alone, Capsicum also contains other compounds, collectively referred to as Capsaicinoids, which include Dihydrocapsaicin and Nordihydrocapsaicin.

A 2007 study noted an increase in fat oxidation (relative to placebo) during low intensity exercise in healthy adult males who consumed 150mg of capsaicin one hour before exercise.

A 2001 found subjects who consumed CH-19 Sweet (containing Capsinoids) had significantly higher core body temperatures and increased oxygen consumption (indicative of energy production) compared to the placebo group.

A later (2010) study, published in “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition”, found that Dihydrocapsiate supplementation (3mg/day) caused a small but noticeable increase in the resting metabolic rate of healthy human subjects.

Neon Sport does not disclose the amount of Capsimax or the percentage of Capsaicin so, in the context of Thermo Rev, it’s difficult to say how effective it really is (though it is potentially pretty effective, assuming the right dose).

Huperzine A

Huperzine A is an Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor which means it blocks the enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, resulting in increased levels of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine controls skeletal muscle and is largely responsible for the ‘mind-muscle connection’. In addition to controlling the muscles, acetylcholine is also involved in learning, memory, decision making, and various other mental activities.

Huperzine A has no know weight-loss implications but instead may help to improve the cognitive aspect of the Thermo Rev formula. A dose as low as 50mcg would technically be effective, so under-dosing is not an issue here.

The Bottom Line

Most of the fat-burning potential of Thermo Rev is due to the stimulant-content. That being said, there is definitely some potential here. Unfortunately, since we don’t know the doses of any of the ingredients, it’s difficult to say how much (if at all) the non-stimulant ingredients contribute. Users may feel noticeably more alert and focused, especially with multiple servings daily.
