Test 3X SX-7 Black Onyx: An Evidence-Based Review

D-Aspartic Acid can be found in tons of test-boosters these days, primarily because it is one of the few ingredients that has actually been shown to increase Testosterone in healthy human subjects. Unfortunately, these effects may be short-lived in individuals with initially healthy testosterone levels, with low-test individuals being the most likely to derive much benefit. Still, DAA may certainly encourage an optimal hormonal environment.

We discuss D-Aspartic Acid in-depth in this article where we also discuss proper dosing. Test 3X SX-7 Black Onyx contains 3.21g of DAA per serving, a precise clinical dose.


Tribulus has a well-documented history of use as an aphrodisiac and libido enhancer. Over the years, it has also gained a reputation as a Testosterone-booster, although research indicates this reputation is undeserved.

A 2005 study, published in the “Journal of Ethnopharamcology” found that 200mg daily (60% saponin content) had no effect on Testosterone in healthy men.

These results were replicated in a 2007 study in which 450mg of Tribulus extract daily failed to influence Testosterone levels in male athletes.

Even a 2012 study, this time testing the effects of 6g of Tribulus extract on infertile men, found a less than significant trend towards increased Testosterone.

The 250mg dose of Tribulus present in Test 3X SX-7 Black Onyx may provide some libido enhancement but that’s about it. Tribulus just doesn’t boost testosterone.


Boron, a mineral that was extremely popular in the early days of bodybuilding, is now making a comeback, particularly in test-boosters.

We discuss the testosterone-boosting potential of Boron in-depth in this article but, to make a long story short, it may be somewhat effective assuming the right dose (10mg+).

Test 3X SX-7 Black Onyx contains 200mg of Boron Citrate supplying 10mg of elemental Boron, right around the dose needed to encourage higher Testosterone levels.


Ashwagandha is used in all kinds of supplements, mostly as an adaptogen/stress-reducer. Indeed, it has been shown to reduce stress/Cortisol in human subjects throughout multiple studies which may indirectly support healthy Testosterone levels as well.

A 2010 study, published in Fertility and Sterility”, found that Ashwagandha (5g basic root powder) was able to restore Testosterone levels in infertile men, though subjects did not experience spikes beyond the normal range.

These findings were replicated in a 2011 study in which it was also noted that the effects were more apparent in stressed men (Ashwagandha is a known adaptogen).

Elsewhere, Ashwagandha has also been shown to reduce Cortisol levels at doses of 125mg and 300mg daily.

Test 3X SX-7 Black Onyx contains 125mg of Sensoril (standardized Ashwagandha extract), in-line with what has been shown to reduce Cortisol in humans.


Safed Musli is an Indian herb which has traditionally been used as an aphrodisiac and remedy for sexual dysfunction.

A 2011 study, published in “Andrologia”, found that mice fed Safed Musli experienced improved erectile function on par with low dose Testosterone treatment. No studies have directly tested the effects of Safed Musli on testosterone, but a 2009 study noted increased prostatic weigh in mice fed 200mg/kg/day for 30 days, indicative of increased Testosterone. Unfortuantely, this study did not measure serum Testosterone, so it can’t be definitively stated that the results were due to increased Testosterone.

Due to the lack of human studies, Safed Musli still has a long way to go before it can be considered an effective test-booster, but the preliminary evidence suggests that, at the very least, it may enhance libido and improve sexual health.

Test 3X SX-7 Black Onyx contains 100mg of Safed Musli per serving, a moderate dose as far as most test-boosters are concerned.


Smallanthus sonchifolius, also known as Yacon, is mostly used as a digestive-health-aid, but preliminary evidence suggests it may also influence Testosterone.

A recent (2013) study from “Biomolecules & therapeutics” found that 200mg/kg of Yacon extract in (healthy) mice was able to reduce the breakdown of Testosterone, ultimately resulting an increase over the course of 6 weeks of supplementation.

No human studies have been conducted at this time regarding the effects of Yacon on Testosterone and given that the dose present in Test 3X SX-7 Black Onyx is only 100mg (compared to 200mg/kg used in the one study), any influence would likely be pretty slight.


Olive Leaf Extract is generally standardized for Oleuropein which we’ve also come across in a lot of fat-burners due to its potential for releasing Noradrenaline. In the context of Test 3X SX-7 Black Onyx, however, MuscleTech appears primarily concerned with preliminary evidence that suggests test-boosting properties as well.

A 2013 study, published in “The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry”, found that Oleuropein ingestion (1% of diet) increased testicular Testosterone concentrations in mice over a 28 day treatment period.

No human studies have been conducted at this time to further investigate these effects so it’s difficult to interpret the 50mg dose present in Test 3X SX-7 Black Onyx.


Pedalium murex has been traditionally used with Tribulus for enhancing libido and overall sexual well-being, though actual studies are pretty scarce.

A 2102 study from the “Journal of Ethnopharmacology” found that rats treated with Pedalium murex extract (50-150mg/kg daily) experienced significant increases in Testosterone over a 28 day period.

At this time, no human studies exist so it’s difficult to determine how much Pedalium murex really contributes to the overall effect of the Test 3X SX-7 Black Onyx formula.


Test 3X SX-7 Black Onyx is supposed to increase Testosterone while reducing Estrogen and keeping Cortisol in check. It may be moderately effective at reducing Cortisol and encouraging optimal Testosterone levels, but it’s not going to send your Test through the roof. At about $80 per serving, it’s way too expensive for us to recommend at this time. There are better options out there for less.
