Pro Supps FenuMass



FenuMASS contains two types of Fenugreek extract, Torabolic and TestoSurge, both standardized for high levels of bioactives. Fenugreek (in general) has been shown to increase Testosterone but has also failed to do so using the same dosing, so these effects should be considered unreliable at this time. We discuss Fenugreek and its effects on Testosterone in depth in this article.

Fenugreek can, at the very least, enhance libido and sexual well-being, creating the illusion of increased Testosterone. FenuMASS contains a whopping 1000mg of total Fenugreek extracts per serving though, more than we’ve seen in any other test-booster. So, if you respond to Fenugreek, FenuMASS should do the trick.

Bulbine Natalensis

Bulbine Natalensis has traditionally been used as an aphrodisiac and herbal test-booster, appearing also in Pro Supps original test-booster, Halotropin.

A 2010 study, published in “Pharmaceutical Biology”, found that Bulbine Natalensis (25,50,100mg/kg) increased Testosterone in mice quite significantly, with 50mg being the most effective dose.

These findings were in-line with those of an earlier (2009) study in which 50mg/kg of Bulbine Natalensis extract increased Testosterone levels in mice by around 350%. While these Testosterone boosting effects are actually quite potent (compared to other alleged test-boosters), there was also organ damage comparable to what can occur during certain oral steroid cycles, so keeping the dose low is likely the best way to go.

It’s not clear whether Bulbine Natalensis can boost Testosterone in humans like it can in mice, but the preliminary research is quite encouraging (given the large increases seen in mice). It should still be considered a speculative ingredient, but it may ultimately enhance the overall efficacy of the FenuMASS formula.

Horny Goat Weed

Horny Goat Weed contains Icariin, the compound primarily responsible for the sexual-enhancement effects.

A 2006 study, published in the “Asian Journal of Andrology”, found that Icariin (80mg/kg) was able toincrease Testosterone roughly three times as much as the control group in chemically castrated mice. However, the dose used in this particular study would be roughly equivalent to a 200lb human consuming 1150mg pure Icariin daily.

Pro Supps does not disclose the exact dose of Horny Goat Weed in FenuMASS but, given a 470mg (pretty crowded) proprietary blend, we’d estimate no more than 100mg or so.

Eurycoma Longifolia

Eurycoma Longifolia, also known as Tongkat Ali has been shown, in various studies, to increase Testosterone in male rats, but the only human studies that exist have tested the effects of Eurycoma Longifolia in infertile men, not healthy men.

A 2010 study published in the “Asian Journal of Andrology” found that supplementation with 200mg of an extract of Eurycoma Longifolia significantly improved various indications of male fertility (in humans), though the mechanism of action was unknown.

A 2012 study published in “Andrologia: Volume 44” (the same researchers from the above mentioned human study) found that men suffering from Hypogonadism (diminishing functionality of the gonads) who were treated with a 200 mg daily dose of Eurycoma longifolia extract reached normal Testosterone levels after a 30 day period.

A true “clinical dose” of Eurycoma Longifolia would be around 200mg but chances are FenuMASS contains less than that.

Wild Yam

Wild Yam is yet another ingredient in FenuMASS the function of which remains unclear. It has been alleged, not necessarily by Pro Supps, to function as an Estrogen mimetic, the opposite of what would make sense to include in FenuMASS. However, preliminary research indicates that compounds found in Wild Yam, such as Diosgenin, have not influence on Estrogen.

Pro Supps makes no mention of Wild Yam specifically, or how it fits into the FenuMASS formula.

Astragalus Membranaceus

Astragalus has appeared in tons of supplements across many different categories, but Pro Supps claims that its purpose in FenuMASS is to block Estrogen. Unfortunately, this has not been studied in-depth, but the only (in vitro) study that exists failed to find any influence of Astragalus (ethanolic extract) on Estrogen receptors.

Astragalus may, however, help preserve male fertility, as evidenced in a 2012 study from “Phytotherapy Research”, but this does not appear to be due to any direct Androgen-signaling property, as Astragalus has failed to influence Androgen-receptor signaling in vitro.

In the context of FenuMASS, it’s unclear whether Astragalus serves any important purpose.

Dan Shen

Salvia miltiorrhiza is one ingredient we have not yet seen in test-booster, just fat-burners such as Hydroxycut SX-7 and Hydroxycut SX-7 Black Onyx, both by MuscleTech.

A 2006 study, published in “Phytotherapy Research”, found that Salvia increased Dopamine release in mice. These results were replicated in another 2006 study from “Neurochemical Research”, also in mice.

There are currently no human studies at all, let alone regarding Salvia miltiorrhiza’s potential influence on Testosterone/Estrogen. So, in the context of FenuMASS, we’d consider it a pretty speculative ingredient.

The Bottom Line

The main highlights of FenuMASS are definitely the massive dose of Fenugreek (potentially pretty effective) as well as Bulbine Natalensis (speculative, but also potentially effective). The rest of the ingredients are pretty standard as far as test-boosters go, most of them pretty under-researched.  If you’re looking to build muscle, FenuMASS will most likely fall short.  If that’s your goal, check out our Best Muscle Building Supplements list.
