Performix Iridium IONi Review

Iridium IONi is a pre-workout by Performix, the brand behind the original Ion as well as several other formulas including Super T.  The Iridium Ioni formula is similar to the original Ion formula, but with an additional proprietary blend containing several ingredients that aren’t found in the original Ion.  We discuss those ingredents below.  Please refer to our review of the original Performix Ion for details on the ingredients that remained the same…

Performix Iridium Ioni

Theacrine is a stimulant compound which is somewhat similar to Caffeine in terms of structure and effect.  Preliminary research suggests that, unlike Caffeine, Theacrine does not appear to cause tolerance as quickly as Caffeine.  This makes it of interest to those who find themselves needing more and more Caffeine, but more studies are needed to understand the implications of this property in humans.

To learn more about Theacrine, check out this article.  In the context of Performix Iridium Ioni, Theacrine may add to the perceived energy, but it’s not much of a game changer, consiering there are already several potent stimulants in the formula.

Phosphatidic Acid is a phospholipid component of cell-membranes which has been shown, in vitro, to stimulate mTOR, a signaling molecule which initiates muscle protein synthesis.

Phosphatidic Acid has been shown to enhance mTOR signaling (measured in vitro) and ultimately increase muscle hypertrophy and strength in resistance trained males over an 8 week period.

An earlier (2012) pilot study, published in the “Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition”, found that Phosphatidic Acid supplementation (750mg daily) increased squat strength and Lean Body Mass (LBM) slightly more than the placebo group in response to 8 weeks of resistance training.

Although the results of this pilot study were not as encouraging as the most recent (2014) study, they both indicate that Phosphatic Acid can enhance strength and muscle growth, at least to some degree.

Unfortunately, Performix Iridium Ioni likely contains far less Phosphatidic Acid than what was used in either of these studies (750mg), so it probably isn’t that effective in this case.

Glycerol is osmolytic, meaning it can regulate the amount of fluid inside cells.  For this reason, it is considered an effective “pump” ingredient, but this property may also enhance performance during long duration exercise where dehydration would become a contributing factor to diminished performance.

Unfortunately, as with most of the physicall performance enhancing ingredients in Performix Iridium Ioni, Glycerol appears quite under-dosed relative to what can be found in most pump-enhancing pre-workout supplements.

Leucine is capable of stimulating muscle protein synthesis to a greater extent than any other amino acid.  Because of this, it is generally included in supplements designed to increase muscle growth and reduce muscle breakdown.  At doses of 3-5g, Leucine can be quite effective, especially when dietary protein intake is lacking (like on a diet).

However, Performix Iridium Ioni contains far less than what can be considered a clinically effective dose of Leucine.

Creatine HCL

Creatine is hands down the most extensively researched, reliable, safe performance enhancing supplement available.  It has been shown to increase strength and muscular endurance.

Creatine HCL is an alternate form of Creatine (bonded with Hydrchloric Acid) which is alleged to be more easily absorbed than other forms.  However, no study has ever confirmed this and login would suggest that it is no more effective than Creatine Monohydrate.  It may be easier on the stomach though, for those that have trouble taking Creatine Monohydrate in large doses.

Performix doen’t list the amount of Creatine HCL is Iridium Ioni, so we’re left to do a bit of guess work.  Based on the weight of the proprietary blend as a whole, there is no way Iridium Ioni contains anywhere near a clinical dose of Creatine HCL.

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb with a wide variety of uses relating to performance enhancement, cognitive enhancement, stress-reduction, and general health.  In the context of Performix Iridium Ioni, it is primary intended to combat Cortisol levels and reduce the impact of physical and mental stress.

Although Ashwagandha, in general, is quite effective, it’s not clear whether Iridum Ioni contains anywhere near an effective dose.  In fact, we’d be willing to bet that it doesn’t.

The Bottom Line

Like all Performix products, Iridium Ioni contains several ingredients that can improve physical endurance, strength, cognitive function, and energy, but just about every single one of them is under-dosed.  This renders the formula ineffective in the eyes of science.  Performix of course claims that they are able to severely under-dose key ingredents because of they’re patented absorption technology, but we have yet to see any studies proving this.  Logic suggests that this is nonsense, since many of the bioavailability of many of these ingredients is already close to 100%.

Ingredients like Creatine, Citrulline, and Beta-Alanine don’t need “extra absorption power”.  They are already quite well absorbed when dosed correctly.  Performix is just trying to put a new spin on an old trick…but we’re not falling for it.
