Olympus Labs Rauwolscine: An Evidence-Based Review

Essential Series Rauwolscine is a single ingredient supplement by Olympus Labs which contains Rauwolfia Serpentina which the company claims is standardized to 90% Rauwolscine (also known as Alpha-Yohimbine).

Olympus Labs Rauwolscine

Olympus Labs makes the following claims about its Essential Series Rauwoslcine supplement:

  • Fat-Burning
  • Appetite Suppression
  • Mood Elevation
  • Libido Enhancement

So let’s take a quick look under the hood to see if the science supports these claims…

Rauwolfia Serpetina (Extract)

Rauwolfia Serpentina is a plant which contains, among other things, Rauwolscine.  Rauwolscine, as we discuss in this article, is a potent fat-burning molecule.  It functions as an alpha-adrenergic receptor agonist (same mechanism as Yohimbine), effectively blocking the receptors that limit the amount of fat the body burns during exercise.  This results in far more fat being burned during exercise.

Rauwolfia Serpentina is one of the more common plants used to extract Rauwolscine from and is often used in pre-workout/fat-burners because it is cheaper than pure Rauwolscine HCL.

Olympus Labs claims  that this particular Rauwolscine supplement contains 3mg per serving, meaning there would be about 3.3-3.4mg of Rauwolfia extract per serving, but there is one important issue to keep in mind…

Extracts Are Not Pure

When dealing with plant extracts, the standardization expressed on the Supplement Facts panel is not always accurate.  In fact, a recent study which gathered various Yohimbine supplements and tested them for purity and label claim accuracy found some astonishing discrepancies between label claims and the actual level of active Yohimbine in the products.  Nearly all of the supplements tested contained widely varying doses of active Yohimbine.

Not only did many of the products differ in terms of the amount of Yohimbine vs what the label stated, but many of them also contained other alkaloids which weren’t listed on the label.  Rauwolscine is not different than Yohimbine in the sense that an extract which is allegedly standardized for a certain amount can’t be considered reliable.

Results like this prove that we can’t simply trust the label claims made about extracts that contain Yohimbine or similar alkaloids like Rauwolscine, so can we really trust Olympus Labs on this one?

Third Party Testing

Third Party Testing–that is, sending products to a non-affiliated (third party) lab to have them analyzed for active components–is really the only way to prove that a supplement meets label claims.  Manufacturer-produced Certificates Of Analyses are worthless when you consider the fact that it wouldn’t be in their best interest to show you a COA that says the product isn’t pure, and it also doesn’t account for manufacturers under-dosing to cut costs.

So, even if Olympus swears up and down that this product contains 3mg of Rauwolscine per serving, they might be mistaken.  What makes extracts particularly problematic is also the fact that they are difficult to test due to unreliable doses of active ingredients.  Most labs won’t be able to test this product, even if Olympus Labs wants take on the extra expense.

Dosing Rauwolscine

Rauwolscine is ultra-potent compared to Yohimbine.  While Yohimbine is commonly taken in doses of 5-10mg at once, Rauwolscine is effective at doses of just 1-3mg.  Unfortunately, since each capsule of Olympus Labs Rauwolscine (allegedly) contains 3mg, some people may flat out not be able to handle it.  We generally recommend people start with 1mg of Rauwolscine before possibly increasing the dose, but 3mg isn’t safe for everyone.

This is one example of when over-dosing may be the issue, rather than under-dosing…that is, assuming the Rauwolfia Serpentina extract used in this case actually contains what the Supplement Facts panel states.

The Bottom Line

If you’ve read our most recent article on Rauwoslcine, you’re aware of just how powerful it can be as a fat-burner when dosed appropriately and used correctly.  However, because of the unreliable nature of extracts in general, especially those that supposedly contain Yohimbine and Rauwolscine, we recommend finding a Rauwolscine product that contains Pure Rauwolscine HCL.
