Nolvadex: The Ultimate Post Cycle Therapy (PCT) Drug

When it comes to Post Cycle Therapy, no compound–supplement or drug–receives more attention than Nolvadex.

It has become the “gold standard” of estrogen blockers, used by everyone from cancer patients to bodybuilders.

If it’s less estrogen you desire, then it’s Nolvadex you want.

In this article, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about it, including:

  • What It Is
  • How It Works
  • Dosing
  • Side Effects
  • Where To Buy It

And a whole lot more.

So, if you’re ready to learn everything there is to know about Nolvadex, let’s dive right in…

What Is Nolvadex?

Nolvadex Pills

Nolvadex is a brand name for Tamoxifen Citrate, a powerful Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM) originally developed way back in the 1960’s by ICI (now known as AstraZeneca).

Nolvadex Molecule

As it turns out, the invention of Nolvadex was actually kind of an accident…

You see, ICI chemical researchers were actually trying to develop a contraceptive, but Tamoxifen ended up falling short when they tested it in humans.

Although it failed as a contraceptive, it showed remarkably potent estrogen suppression and, because of this, some researchers theorized that it could potentially treat Breast Cancer.

They were right!

Tamoxifen was put to the test and found to be quite effective at reducing the spread of Breast Cancer cells due to potent suppression of Estrogen, which is known to accelerate the spread of cancer cells.

Thus, the drug was re-positioned and introduced as Nolvadex.

It quickly became a widely prescribed first-line treatment for preventing the spread of Breast Cancer, and is still one of the top Estrogen blocking drugs on the market today.

Since it’s introduction, Nolvadex has been studied extensively and has been proven to help treat Breast Cancer by blocking Estrogen.

There’s really no doubt that it works, but let’s talk about how…

How Does Nolvadex Work?

how does Nolvadex block Estrogen?

Like I said earlier, Nolvadex is a powerful Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM).

The term ‘SERM’ refers to any molecule with a chemical structure so similar to Estrogen that it can bind to Estrogen Receptors, thereby blocking actual Estrogen from binding to those receptors.

The result?

Less Estrogenic activity, which has numerous physiological effects in the body, including reducing the spread of cancer cells.

The following diagram illustrates how Tamoxifen (Nolvadex) binds to the Estrogen receptor, blocking Estrogen from doing so.

SERMs are considered a first-line treatment for Breast Cancer or any other condition that requires potent Estrogen suppression.

Directly binding to the Estrogen Receptors (so Estrogen cannot) is perhaps the most direct route for blocking Estrogen in general.

This is in contrast to Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs), such as androsta 3 5 diene 7 17 dione, which block Estrogen by preventing the enzyme Aromatase from converting Testosterone into Estrogen.

Both SERMs and AIs block Estrogen, but in different ways.

Why Do People Use Nolvadex?

man staring at handful of Nolvadex

We’ve already established, Estrogen progresses the spread of Breast Cancer and Nolvadex makes for an effective treatment option.

But, because it’s so effective for suppressing Estrogen, it has been widely adopted by steroids users for post cycle therapy.

You see, when Testosterone is increased artificially with steroids, the body typically responds by:

  • producing less natural Testosterone
  • producing more Estrogen

The body normally keeps a specific balance (or ratio) of Testosterone and Estrogen, so when it all the sudden realizes there’s way more Testosterone floating around, it tries to compensate by producing more Estrogen.

Unfortunately, higher than normal Estrogen levels can lead to some unwanted side effects, some of which are quite severe.

  • Irritability
  • Lethargy
  • Bloating
  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Loss Of Sex-Drive
  • Gynecomastia (Bitch Tits)

Nolvadex also has another mechanism that makes it of use for Post Cycle Therapy, though…

Research has shown that Tamoxifen (Nolvadex) can stimulate the release of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) which in turn helps restore natural Testosterone production.

This is why people typically prefer Nolvadex over other PCT drugs.

It doesn’t just block Estrogen.  It also encourages natural Test levels to rebound as well.

What Are The Benefits Of Nolvadex And Why Is It So Important For PCT?

Nolvadex plays too important roles when it comes to Post Cycle Therapy.

  1. suppressing estrogen
  2. restoring natural testosterone levels

For bodybuilders, taking Nolvadex post-cycle massively reduces the likelihood of developing the Estrogen-related side effects we discussed above while their natural Testosterone levels return to normal.

As a potent Estrogen suppressor, Nolvadex may:

  • reduce water weight (dries you out)
  • prevent hair loss
  • make you leaner and more defined
  • keep your mood constant
  • prevent gynecomastia

There is no SERM stronger than Nolvadex, so it’s become known as the ‘gold standard’ for Post Cycle Therapy.

What Kind Of Results Can I Expect With Nolvadex?

man staring in the mirror

If you’re on steroids, and you’re using Nolvadex as a PCT solution, you can expect to avoid the bulk of the Estrogen-induced side effects we discussed above

That means no:

  • gyno
  • bloating
  • mood swings

More importantly, Nolvadex gives your natural Testosterone levels a chance to rebound faster.

If you’ve ever taken steroids and come off without a PCT, you were taking a gamble.  While you may not have developed gynecomastia (worst case scenario), you probably felt terrible.

Now you know why…

Too much Estrogen!

Using Nolvadex post-cycle helps ensure a smooth transition, not only helping you avoid estrogen-related side effects, but also helping you hang on to your gains.

What Are The Side Effects Of Nolvadex?

man experiencing headaches from nolvadex

Nolvadex may sound like a miracle drug, but it does come with its fair share of potential side effects, including:

  • Extreme thirst (it dries you out)
  • Headache (perhaps due to water loss)
  • Hot Flashes
  • Nausea
  • General Fatigue
  • Joint Pain/Dry Joints

Of course, these are just some of the more common, less severe side effects.

It’s unlikely, but Nolvadex can also result in:

  • Weight Gain (Not Necessarily A Bad Thing)
  • Sexual Dysfunction (So Does Low Test Though)
  • Skin Rash

But we’re talking about a pretty low likelihood here, especially when only used for a short period of time for PCT purposes.

The most common complaint with Nolvadex is that it makes you extremely thirsty and may cause stiff or dry joints.

This most likely has to do with the fact that Estrogen increases water retention and lowering it reduces water retention, resulting in the physiological sensation of thirst and a general feeling of ‘dryness’.

Increased thirst is pretty normal and can be easily remedied/handled by carrying a water bottle and staying hydrated.

As for the joint pain, consider taking some kind of joint support supplement and some Fish Oil.

What Is An Effective Dosage Of Nolvadex?

nolvadex tablets spread out across table

How much Nolvadex you should take during your Post Cycle Therapy depends entirely on the severity of the cycle you’re running.

For lighter cycles of not-so-harsh compounds, an appropriate dosing schedule would be something like:

  • Week 1 – 20mg
  • Week 2 – 20mg
  • Week 3 – 10mg
  • Week 4 – 10mg

For more serious, harsher compounds, an appropriate dosing schedule would look something like:

  • Week 1 – 40mg
  • Week 2 – 30mg
  • Week 3 – 30mg
  • Week 4 – 10mg

It’s not wise to run Nolvadex for much longer than 4-6 weeks or so, nor is it necessary.

You see, Estrogen isn’t just some annoying hormone that makes you pack on water weight and act like a girl.  It has legitimate physiological roles that it needs to fulfill.

Suppressing it for to long can interfere with things like:

To put it simply, you need Estrogen if you’re a man.  Just not too much of it.

When Should I Start Taking Nolvadex?

Most people begin their PCT regimen immediately after they finish their cycle.

There’s some debate as to whether it’s a good idea to start taking your PCT while still on cycle but, ultimately, it depends on what kind of cycle you’re running.

If the compound you’re on Aromatizes (freely converts into Estrogen), you may need some Estrogen-blockage while still on cycle.

If it doesn’t, you can simply begin taking your Nolvadex the day you stop taking whatever it is you’re running.

Everyone reacts to steroids/pro-hormones somewhat differently.  It’s important to pay attention to your body and make sure you have your Nolva before you begin your cycle.

That way, if you notice any kind of Estrogen-related side effects (i.e. puffy, sore nipples) you can immediately take care of it.

Even if you’re already experiencing symptoms of gynecomastia, Nolvadex can help treat it.

Is Nolvadex Legal?

Doctor writing prescription for Nolvadex

Nolvadex is a prescription only drug, but it remains unscheduled in the US.

Scheduled drugs are drugs that have some sort of misuse or abuse potential.  Schedule I drugs are seen as having a high misuse/abuse potential while Schedule V drugs are seen as less likely to be misused/abused.

Tamoxifen (Nolvadex) is not scheduled at all, meaning it has no real misuse/abuse potential.

It’s certainly not addictive and doesn’t cause any sort of high, so in the US, it’s not seen as much of an issue.

This means it can legally be used, bought, and sold for “research purposes”.

Given the fact that there are more problematic drugs such as Heroin and Meth with high abuse potential for the US government to be concerned with, it’s unlikely that Tamoxifen will ever be scheduled.

So, at least for the time being, you can easily find it online and it’s not illegal for you to buy it.

This is the same “research purposes only” loophole that’s used by people selling all other research chemicals, such as Etizolam.

Where To Buy Legit Nolvadex

shopping cart full of pills

If you Google “buy Nolvadex” or “buy Tamoxifen Citrate”, you’ll find tons of Nolvadex for sale…

That is…

You’ll find tons of sites claiming to have real Nolvadex for sale.

Usually, it’s sold in the form of powder suspended in a liquid solution.

The more important thing to worry about is whether you can trust your source.  Some research chemical websites with solid reputations include:

If you want more in-depth info about these vendors, check out this article on Where To Buy Nolvadex.

Sure, there are other vendors but why risk it?

Personally, I’m a BlueKem fan because they offer tablets while the others come in some sketchy solution that may or may not be evenly distributed, stable, or otherwise contaminated (since they’re essentially just mixing powder-form Tamoxifen into a little bottle and shaking them up).

Plus the liquids tastes horrible!

Go with a supplier that has a good reputation, provides good customer service, and has some kind of refund policy in place.

The Bottom Line On Nolvadex

man flexing his arms

If you want the absolute strongest Estrogen-blocker known to man, you want Nolvadex.

There are other SERMs out there, and some of them are pretty strong, but Nolva really is the gold standard when it comes to Post Cycle Therapy.

Not taking your PCT seriously can have serious consequences and, while there are PCT supplements that can handle less harsh compounds, a real steroid cycle requires a real PCT (like Nolvadex).

The main issue you’re going to run into is a matter of trust.   Plenty of vendors claim to sell legit Nolvadex, but only a small handful actually do.

Do your research and choose carefully!
