Phospha Muscle is the most recent edition to the Performance Series which MuscleTech has recently expanded quite a bit with such products as CreacTor, Micellar Whey, and Hydroxycut Hardcore Next Gen. MuscleTech claims Phospha Muscle is capable of stimulating:

  • 60% Increase Strength
  • 5lbs Muscle Mass
  • Spikes mTOR x 6

But are these claims actually backed by science?  Let’s take a look at the ingredients and see what MuscleTech has to offer here…

Phospha Muscle Ingredients

Phospha Muscle contains only two active ingredients:


Phosphatidic Acid is a phospholipid component of cell-membranes which has been shown, in vitro, to stimulate mTOR, a signaling molecule which initiates muscle protein synthesis.

Fuel:One references one particular study from the “Nutrition & Metabolism” which found that Phosphatidic Acid enhanced mTOR signaling (measured in vitro) and ultimately increased muscle hypertrophy and strength in resistance trained males over an 8 week period.

Interestingly, this study compared the mTOR stimulating abilities of various Phosphatic Acid precursors from different sources and found that Soy-derived Phosphatic Acid was significantly more effective than egg-derived Phosphatidic Acid.

An earlier (2012) pilot study, published in the “Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition”, found that Phosphatidic Acid supplementation (750mg daily) increased squat strength and Lean Body Mass (LBM) slightly more than the placebo group in response to 8 weeks of resistance training.

Although the results of this pilot study were not as encouraging as the most recent (2014) study, they both indicate that Phosphatic Acid can enhance strength and muscle growth, at least to some degree. Furthermore, the 2014 study, the study emphasized by Fuel:One, had a better design which may account for the differences.


Tart Cherry is becoming popular as recovery-aid, and we assume that’s why Fuel:One added it to the Phospha Build formula.

A 2010 study, published in the “Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports”, found that Tart Cherry juice reduced various markers of muscular damage in human subjects following exercise.

Tart Cherry simply serves as a way of enhancing the recovery aspect of the Phospha Muscle formula.

Phospha Muscle Ingredient Takeaway

PhosphaMuscle contains a clinical dose of Phosphatidic Acid which may be moderately effective for inducing muscle growth and increasing strength.  The impact is not going to be drastic.  If you’re looking for drastic muscle gains, you’ll need to see our best Muscle Builders List.

Phospha Muscle is similar to other Phosphatidic Acid supplements in that it contains the clinically studied 750mg dose. The addition of Tart Cherry (a MuscleTech favorite) may help to enhance recovery but we wouldn’t consider it a particularly important ingredient in the context of Phospha Muscle.

Phosphatidic Acid is still in the early stages of research so we can’t draw any definitive conclusions at this time. That said, the preliminary research is pretty promising so it may be worth a shot for those looking for a muscle-builder that is a little different.
