Is Yohimbine Dangerous?

If you’re a long-time reader of, you’ve probably come across Yohimbine before.  It often forms the basis for high stimulant fat-burners and is certainly one the most effective single-ingredient fat-burners that exists.

Naturally, any time a supplement is deemed effective, questions are raised regarding safety.  Perhaps we’ve been conditioned to believe that supplements can’t be effective AND safe.  To be fair, there is some truth to this claim, especially when it comes to stimulant driven fat-burners.  However, supplements in general don’t abide by this rule.

Just look at Creatine or Beta-Alanine, two highly effective performance enhancing supplements that are also incredibly safe.  Surely there are more supplements out there that are effective AND safe, right?!

What Is Yohimbine?

Yohimbine is a stimulatory molecule that is capable of inducing weight-loss in a relatively short period of time.  Although it does not directly burn fat by itself, by functioning as an alpha-adrenergic receptor antagonist, it can massively increase the amount of fat that is burned during exercise.

Is Yohimbine Safe?

Because Yohimbine has been studied for other purposes besides weight-loss, there is a fair amount of data to establish its safety profile.  Side effects such as nausea, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, and anxiety have been noted with standard doses ranging from 10-20mg/day.

Irregular heartbeat has been noted in some cases as well, though only in certain individuals.  It’s not a standard reaction and is much more likely to occur in those who have some sort of preexisting condition.

Acute toxicity has been observed with massive doses, like 5000mg, but there is no evidence to suggest that Yohimbine is inherently toxic at normal doses.  Many people get scared when they see the word “toxicity” but keep in mind that virtually every molecule can become toxic at high enough doses.

The Real Issue Is Transparency

The real issue with Yohimbine isn’t that it is inherently dangerous.  The real issue is that very few Yohimbine supplements are standardized for the amount expressed on the label.

Yohimbine is commonly found in the form of Yohimbe Extract which is supposed to be standardized for a specific amount of active Yohimbine.  However, many supplement companies don’t even list the amount of Yohimbine in these supplements, meaning consumers have no way of telling how much they’re taking.

To make matters worse, even supplements that do have a precise dose of Yohimbine listed on the label are inaccurate, meaning there is either more or less than the amount expressed on the label.

Our Recommendation: Rauwolscine (Alpha-Yohimbine)

Rauwolscine, also known as Alpha-Yohimbine, is chemically and functionally similar to Yohimbine but is much more potent by weight.  It requires a much lower dose to exert potent fat-burning effects and is not prone to cause many of the negative side effects often experienced with Yohimbine.  Effective doses range from just 1mg to 3mg/day, whereas Yohimbine requires doses of 15-30mg/day, making Rauwolscine a better bang for your buck.

The Bottom Line

Yohimbine has received its fair share of bad publicity, and while there are some potential side effects to be aware of, it is not inherently dangerous.  As a weight-loss supplement, it can be very effective and is well-tolerated by most people.
