Hydroxycut Next Gen Accelerator is a weight-loss supplement by MuscleTech which is designed to accelerate (hence the use of this word in the name) weight-loss when taken prior to cardio. The formula is pretty similar to other recent releases by MuscleTech, and like those other formulas, some of the ingredients appear to be severely under-dosed.
Beta-Alanine is probably the single most pervasive ingredient used in pre-workout supplements these days. While most pre-workout users are aware of the tingling sensation caused by Beta-Alanine consumption, this is actually not at all related to its primary mechanism of action, just a harmless side effect.
Beta-Alanine is a precursor to the dipeptide Carnosine which functions as a Lactic Acid buffer in muscle tissue, thereby reducing fatigue. Beta-Alanine is a highly effective and reliable way of increasing muscular Carnosine concentrations, at a daily intake of 3-6g for at least a few weeks.
Various studies have demonstrated that Beta-Alanine supplementation enhances physical performance.
Unfortunately, Hydroxycut Next Gen Accelerator contains just 1g of Beta-Alanine per serving, far below the clinically effective range, so how effective is it in this case? Probably not very.
Taurine is yet another common ingredient in pre-workout supplements, mostly because of a study or two that demonstrated some very slight performance enhancement, but other studies have failed to note these benefits so it can’t be considered very reliable.
That said, Taurine is a highly effective recovery-aid, having been shown to reduce oxidative damage in muscle tissue resulting from exercise in multiple studies.
So, while MuscleTech’s justification for using Taurine in the Hydroxycut Next Gen Accelerator formula may be a tad flawed, it may still serve a purpose. Hydroxycut Next Gen Accelerator contains 1g of Taurine per serving.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid
Conjugated Linoleic Acid is one the most popular non-stimulant weight-loss supplements but, as we discuss in this article, the benefits have certainly been exaggerated by the mainstream supplement industry.
Out of the studies that have noted benefits, the most notable weight-loss was just a couple pounds over 2-3 months, with many studies flat-out failing to find any benefit.
L-Carnitine L-Tartrate is a highly bioavailable form of Carnitine, an amino acid that is required for the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria of cells where they are utilized (burned) for energy.
Unfortunately, studies evaluating the impact of Carnitine supplementation on body weight have returned less than encouraging results. Carnitine may help encourage a stable fat-burning environment but likely won’t induce any sort of notable weight-loss in individuals who already get enough dietary Carnitine (if you eat meat, you’re good).
Hydroxycut Next Gen Accelerator contains 500mg of L-Carnitine L-Tartrate per serving, not a particularly high dose relative to what “might” help burn fat.
Robusta Coffee contains, among other things, Chlorogenic Acid. Chlorogenic Acid has been shown to reduce carbohydrate absorption, effective mimicking the effects of a low-carb diet and eventually resulting in weight-loss.
Although some of the research on Robusta Coffee extract has been influenced (or completely corrupted) by the financial interests of large supplement companies, it still appears somewhat effective…just not as effective as some companies would have you believe.
Hydroxycut Next Gen Accelerator, like most MuscleTech weight-loss supplements, contains 200mg of Robusta Coffee standardized for 45% Chlorogenic Acid. Users would likely need two servings daily to achieve the benefits.
Caffeine often forms the basis for fat-burning supplements because it is a reliable means of increasing circulating Catecholamines which have inherent fat-burning properties.
How effective Caffeine is as a weight-loss agent depends almost entirely on individual tolerance, as some people are highly resistant and therefore not likely to burn much fat due to Caffeine.
Hydroxycut Next Gen Accelerator contains 135mg of Caffeine per serving, a pretty low dose compared to most fat-burners.
Skullcap has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve mood without decreasing energy of cognitive ability. This characteristic makes it a fine addition to any stimulant-powered supplement that may cause jitters or anxiety in sensitive individuals.
Other than that, it doesn’t really have any direct weight-loss implications. We assume MuscleTech’s goal with Skullcap is to enhance the mental/cognitive aspect of the Hydroxycut Next Gen formula.
Polysaccharides from ophiopogon japonicas have demonstrated anti-diabetic properties in mice, thought to be the result of suppression of adiponectin in fat tissue.
Unfortunately, no human studies have been conducted specifically to investigate these effects further.
Given the relatively small amount of research regarding the weight-loss benefits of Ophiopogon Japonicas, we’d still consider Ophiopogon Japonicas a pretty speculative addition to the Hydroxycut Next Gen Accelerator formula.
Ilex Guayusa contains xanthines such as Caffeine and possibly Theobromine, though MuscleTech doesn’t say for sure. Ultimately, the weight-loss implications for Ilex Guayusa is the same as Caffeine, with absolutely no evidence to suggest it is superior (or even different) in any way.
The Bottom Line
Hydroxycut Next Gen Accelerator is pretty similar to other recent MuscleTech/Hydroxycut formulas in terms of the ingredient profile, but many of those ingredients are pretty under-dosed on a per serving basis. With so many other fat-burning pre-workout supplements out there, we can’t recommend Hydroxycut Hardcore Next Gen Accelerator for those looking for a pre-workout that will help facilitate fat-loss. The reality is that most stimulant-containing pre-workouts will help facilitiate fat-loss to some degree, they just aren’t marketed specifically for that purpose.
