Hydroxycut Black Review

Hydroxycut Black is the soon to be released fat-burner by Hydroxycut (the brand Hydroxycut, as opposed to MuscleTech).  Fortunately, Hydroxycut has released the supplement facts panel so we’ll have a review up shortly…

Hydroxycut Black

Caffeine triggers the release of a group of chemicals known as Catecholamines, some of which (like Noradrenaline) are responsible for inducing lipolysis.  Caffeine is  therefore an effective fat-burning agent, though the effects tend to where off with prolonged use (due to tolerance).

Caffeine, while not a highly effective weight-loss agent on its own, does certainly help to improve the fat-burning profile of the Hydroxycut Black formula.

Robusta Coffee Extract (Chlorogenic Acid)

Robusta Coffee, also known as Green Coffee, contains high amounts of Chlorogenic Acid.  Chlorogenic Acid has been shown to reduce Carbohydrate absorption and therefore may mimick the effects of a low-carb diet to some degree.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha Lipoic Acid is a versatile antioxidant which has numerous health benefits.  In the context of Hydroxycut Black, it may help to lower blood glucose (increase glucose uptake into muscle tissue).

Studies testing the effects of Alpha Lipoic Acid on weight-loss have used much higher doses than what is provided in the Hydroxycut Black formula, but the beneficial impact on blood glucose may occur with lower doses.

Yohimbe is the primary driver of fat-loss in the Hydroxycut Black formula.  The major bioactive, Yohimbine, functions as a potent alpha-adrenergic receptor antagonist, effectively allowing for more fat-burning during exercise than would otherwise normally occur.

We discuss Yohimbe in-depth here, and would definitely suggest reading up on it for those interested in maximizing their fat-loss efforts.

Black Caraway Seed

Black Caraway Seed, known as Nigella Sativa, is a spice which has been used traditionally as an anti-obesity agent.  Unfortunately, human studies measuring any sort of weight-loss benefit have had mixed results.

In one study, Black Caraway Extract did influence weight-loss variables to a very modest degree, but the results were insignificant, meaning the effects weren’t particularly apparent.

Elsewhere, a significant reduction in body weight and waste circumference was noted (in overweight men).  Researchers concluded that this may be due to appetite suppression resulting in less food intake (as opposed to some inherent fat-burning property of Black Caraway Seed Extract).

Ultimately, it appears the weight-loss benefits of Black Caraway Seed are not particularly potent, but it may help the overall efficacy of the Hydroxycut Black formula.

Purslane, or Portulaca oleracea, has demonstrated anti-diabetic properties in mice but has not been researched very extensively in humans.

One recent (2015) study did note favorable effects with regards to blood lipid and glucose levels as well as blood pressure in diabetic humans, but whether Purslane can favorably impact these parameters in healthy individuals remains unclear.

In the context of Hydroxycut Black, Purslane may be somewhat beneficial but it’s certainly not what we’d consider a primary driver.

Arugula is something you’ve probably come across in a salad (hopefully).  It has a mildly bitter flavor and contains relatively high levels of several key vitamins and nutrients (as do other leafy green vegetables).  As far as direct weight-loss benefits, there really aren’t any.  That said, Arugula makes for a fine addition to the nutrient plan of any individual looking to boost their vegetable intake and this may have a favorable impact on weight-loss in the long run.

In the context of Hydroxycut Black, Arugula probably isn’t particularly important but it can’t hurt either, right!?

Chicory contains, among other things, a dietary fiber known as Inulin.  Inulin, like other forms of fiber, is not digested in the stomach but instead goes to the colon where (good) bacteria metabolize it and use it to grow.  Inulin is therefore beneficial for digestive health and also helps stop the body from producing certain types of fats.

In the context of Hydroxycut Black, it’s not clear how beneficial Inulin is (because of the dose), but Inulin itself does have some inherent weight-loss potential which would likely be more noticeable in overweight individuals.

The Bottom Line

Most of the fat-burning potential of Hydroxycut Black comes from the combination of Caffeine and Yohimbine with the other ingredients being either under-dosed or just ineffective in general.  That said, there is definitely some potential here and assuming a steady diet and regular exercise, Hydroxycut Black may facilitate some noticeable weight-loss.  Is it the best fat-burner?  Not by a long shot, but it’s not the worst we’ve come across.
