Multiple studies have confirmed Green Tea Extract appears to be able to induce fat-loss. Although this effect was originally thought to be related to caffeine content, more recent research has pointed to a green tea catechin known as Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) as the compound primarily responsible for these effects.

EGCG is an antioxidant found in green tea, and is a member of the group of antioxidants known as catechins. In addition to its antioxidant properties, EGCG has demonstrated the ability to induce fat loss when combined with caffeine, more than just caffeine alone. EGCG works synergistically with caffeine with regards to its effect on noradrenaline.

As mentioned above, caffeine boosts noradrenaline while EGCG inhibits catechol-o-methyl transferase (COMT), the enzyme responsible for the degredation of noradrenaline. So, caffeine increases noradrenaline, while EGCG prevents its degradation, a synergy which results in excess fat-being burned. EGCG is not effective on its own, nor in people who are highly tolerant to caffeine.


Bitter Orange Extract is generally standardized for Synephrine, but also contains Octopamine, Tyramine, and Hordenine in smaller amounts. Syneprhine became popular after the FDA banned Ephedra as a dietary supplement for weight loss, because they share a similar mechanism of action. While Synephrine has been touted as a replacement for Ephedra, it is important to understand that it is significantly less potent (which is why it is not banned). However, that’s not to say it is completely useless.

A 2011 study, published in the “International Journal of Medicinal Sciences”, found that supplementation of 50mg Syneprhine increased the metabolic rate in human subjects without affecting blood pressure or heart rate. Similarly to Ephedrine, Synephrine is a beta-receptor agonist and an alpha-receptor antagonist, the net effect of which is an increase in lipolysis.


Caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world, and is a well-established ergogenic aid. Caffeine consumption causes an increase in catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine), which induce lipolysis (breakdown of fats). However, the weight loss effects of caffeine tend to fade with prolonged use, so caffeine is not very effective as a fat-burner in the long term. While caffeine’s weight loss potential is negligible, it increases focus and perceived energy in most people, which generally leads to more intense workouts (thus burning more fat), and may act as a mild appetite suppressant in some.


Grapefruit contains several polyphenols, the most important of which are Naringenin, Narinjin, and Nootkatone. which are thought to underly its weight-loss effects. A 2010 study, pubslished in the “American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology and Metabolism”, found supplementation of Nootkatone (isolated) resulted in an increase in metabolic rate which ultimately prevented weight-gain in rats fed a high fat diet. A 2012 study, published in “Metabolism”, found that overweight adults who consumed a half grapefruit at meal-time (3 times/day) for six weeks experienced moderate weight-loss. These findings were in-line with an earlier (2006) study which found that whole grapefruit, grapefruit juice, and grapefruit extract (capsules) resulted in weight loss in obese subjects, with the grapefruit extract being most effective. Finally, a 2008 study published in “Phytomedicine” found that supplementation of SINETROL (a patented combination of grapefruit polyphenols and caffeine) at 1.4g daily reduced body fat in overweight subjects over a 12 week period. Ultimately, grapefruit extract (or even whole grapefruit) is an effective fat-loss agent, though the fat-loss may be not be extremely potent.

Capsicum Annuum (Capsaicin)

Capsimax is a brand name for capsicum extract, a group of plants that include the pepper family. Capsaicin, the active ingredient in Capsimax, has been shown to increase lipolysis (fat burning) in rats as well as humans. A 2007 study noted an increase in fat oxidation (relative to placebo) during low intensity exercise in healthy adult males who consumed 150mg of capsaicin one hour before exercise. These findings make capsaicin of interest to those looking to decrease fat without the use of stimulants and, while some supplement companies certainly overstate the efficacy of Capsaicin as it pertains to weight loss, all studies certainly indicate fat burning potential. Whether Capsaicin can work synergistically with stimulants such as caffeine and syneprhine to further increase fat oxidation remains to be tested.


Evodiamine is a plant extract which appears to mimic the thermogenic effects of Capsaicin in rats. However, no human studies have been published at this time testing the effects of the extract on humans. Due to the lack of human studies available, we cannot determine with any considerable degree of certainty, the efficacy of Evodiamine.


The primary active component of Yohimbe Bark is Yohimbine. As mentioned above, Yohimbine acts as an alpha-2 receptor antagonist, meaning it inhibits the receptor responsible for blocking lipolysis. By blocking the action of this receptor Yohimbine allows for more lipolysis to occur than would normally be permitted by the alpha-adrenergic receptors. A 2006 study showed that while there were no increases in strength, supplementation induced fat loss in athletes (soccer players). While Yohimbine acts directly on alpha-2 receptors, its capacity for lipolysis may be further magnified by its ability to increase the catecholamine neurotransmitters adrenaline and noradrenaline which in turn induce lipolysis. By doing so, Yohimbine both induces lipolysis directly, while simultaneously preventing its inhibition. However, its ability to increase catecholamines may degrade fairly quickly (a few weeks), so for Yohimbine to be truly effective as a weight-loss agent, it must be combined with something that activates the beta-adrenergic receptors in the first place (i.e. caffeine and other stimulants or exercise).


Raspberry Ketone, a molecular constituent of Raspberries, have become a popular weight-loss additive in dietary supplements. However, the evidence for raspberry ketone as a fat-burning ingredient is extremely limited and there is actually no direct evidence the ingredient is effective in oral, supplemental doses. In vitro studies using very high concentrations have shown positive results, but human studies are non-existent. The only human study that exists grouped RK in with several other popular weight loss ingredients so the effects cannot be attributed to raspberry ketone. Even in rat studies, RK fail to show any significant fat-burning effects. The overall consensus of the scientific community is that raspberry ketone are nothing more than industry hype.


Phenylalanine is an amino acid that has shown promise in applications regarding appetite suppression. The mechanism of action is due to the amino acid’s ability to trigger the secretion of cholecystokinin, which is a hormone that essentially tells the body that the stomach is full, as evidenced in a 1994 study pblished in “Metabolism”.

Cocoa Bean Extract (Methylxanthines, Flavanols):
Cocoa Bean Extract contains caffeine as well as several flavanols which are alleged to convey a host of benefits. Though no human studies exist testing the effects of Cocoa extract specifically in regards to weight-loss, a 2014 study noted an increase in fat-oxidation in the skeletal muscle of mice fed Cocoa powder. For now it’s unclear as to whether this holds true in humans.


Phenylethylamines are a class of compound which cause an increase in the catecholamine neurotransmitters (epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine) and as such, is a relatively potent (though short lived) central nervous system stimulant. While studies testing the effects of PEA supplementation on exercise performance are limited, a boost in catecholamines may certainly translate into more energy in the gym, resulting in a more intense workout. As far as direct effects on weight loss, studies are more or less non-existent. However, the general physiological reaction to increases in epinephrine and norepinephrine is activation of the beta-adrenergic receptors which induce lipolysis, so the mechanism by which PEA may induce weight loss is theoretically solid, just not documented. Because the effects are generally short-lived, it is hardly a miracle weight-loss supplement on its own, but combined with other beta-agonists/alpha-antagonists, will likely contribute to the overall effect.


Coleus Forskohlii is an Ayurvedic herb which has been studied (though not extensively) for its potential as a weight-loss agent/testosterone booster. The active component, Forskolin, has been demonstrated to increase Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate (cAMP), the result of which is an increase in the rate of fat-loss. A 2005 study, published in the “Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition”, found that 25mg Forskolin twice a day for 12 weeks was able to prevent weight gain compared to the control group in overweight women. Another 2005 study, the subjects of which were overweight men, found that the same dose (25mg) was able to favorably influence body composition (i.e. less fat, more lean mass), which corresponded with an increase in testosterone over 12 weeks. A more recent 2011 study noted a roughly 2.5% decrease in BMI after 2 months of supplementation. Ultimately, Forskolin may certainly result in weight-loss or at the very least, prevent weight gain. These effects may be more apparent in men, as an increase in cAMP also increases testosterone, which inherently burns fat and increases lean muscle mass.


Yerba Mate comes from a kind of tree native to South America which contains caffeine as well as theobromine (a chemical relative of caffeine). It is consumed as a beverage in many South American countries, but has recently made its way into the mainstream energy market in the US. There is preliminary support for Yerba Mate as a cholesterol lowering agent, but as for a direct effect on weight loss or fat oxidation, more research is required. In the context of the Grenade Thermo Detonator formula, we would consider Yerba Mate just another source of caffeine (conveying the same benefits mentioned above).


DMAE is becoming a popular supplement specifically as a nootropic, because it is a cholinergic compound which may enhance certain aspects of cognition via increasing levels of acetylcholine in the brain. Because of this increase in acetylcholine, potential benefits may include increased exercise capacity but there haven’t been enough human studies to be sure. One study done in 1991 showed that a mixture containing DMAE, ginseng, vitamins, and a few minerals “increased the subjects’ work capacity by improving muscular oxygen utilization”. However, the obvious flaw with these findings is that they did not isolate the variable, and therefore can’t say with any certainty which ingredient was truly responsible for the positive results.


Thermo Detonator contains just about every fat-burning ingredient we would expect to see in any fat-burner, from Syneprhine to Raspberry Ketone to Forskolin. Unfortunately, we are unable to determine the true efficacy of any ingredient because the individual doses are not disclosed and there are too many ingredients to make rough estimates. That being said, given that most of the ingredients are stimulants requiring relatively low doses to be effective, there is no obvious flaw in terms of dosage. The exception may be Coleus Forskohlii, which (depending on the concentration) would generally require a higher dose than what is likely present in the Thermo Detonator formula. That being said, Forskolin may enhance the fat-burning capacity of other ingredients and therefore can’t be viewed as ineffective. At a price of about 35 cents/serving, Thermo Detonator can easily be multi-dosed for increased efficacy, and once the right dose is found (this will tend to vary from person to person), the formula may certainly induce moderate weight loss (when combined with exercise).
