MusclePharm VasoSport: An Evidence-Based Review

VasoSport is a non-stimulant pre-workout supplement by MusclePharm which promises to deliver one thing: PUMPS!  The formula is relatively simple, with just four primary ingredients…

Vaso Sport Ingredients

Although the formula is extremely simple, Vaso Sport does contain some well-known pump-enhancing ingredients…

L-Citrulline Malate

L-Citrulline has quickly become one of the most popular ingredients in pre-workout supplements and research indicates this popularity is in fact deserved.  Studies have shown that Citrulline (usually as Malate) can increase Nitric Oxide production and reduce Ammonia build-up in working muscle tissue, ultimately resulting in better muscular endurance.

In other words, Citrulline won’t increase your max but will definitely allow you to get a few more reps at a given weight.  It may also offer some powerful pumps.

Unfortunately, VasoSport contains just 3g of Citrulline Malate per serving, only half what can be considered a clinical dose.

Nitrosigine

Nitrosigine is a combination of Arginine and Silicon which is more bioavailable than standard Arginine and therefore a more effective supplement than L-Arginine.  Increasing plasma Arginine levels may lead to an increase in blood flow and studies indicate that Nitrosigine is effective as a pump/performance enhancer.

So, in the context of VasoSport, which is supposed to give you pumps, Nitrosigine is effective.  The formula contains 750mg, a standard dose as far as most pump pre-workout supplements go.

Agmatine Sulfate

Agmatine is a metabolite of Arginine which has been shown, in vitro (not humans), to activate Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase, an enzyme which catalyzes Nitric Oxide production.  By increasing Nitric Oxide, Agmatine may be able to provide some noticeable pumps, but there actually isn’t any human research upon which to draw these types of conclusions.

For now, all we have is some anecdotal evidence which suggests Agmatine is effective and a theoretical mechanism by which it may be effective.  But is it actually effective?  Only future studies will tell us…

Vaso Sport contains 750mg of Agmatine per serving, a pretty standard dose.  Not the least, but not the most we’ve seen either.  Plenty of other pre-workouts contain more.

Taurine

Taurine used in a lot of different supplements for a lot of different reasons, but MusclePharm appears to have included it in the VasoSport formula because it is Osmolytic.  An Osmolyte is any substance that can regulate the hydration status of cells.  In other words, Taurine can increase the amount of water in cells which can certainly induce some pumps.

Of course, how much of a pump you’ll get probably depends on how much water you drink, so drink up!

VasoSport Ingredient Takeaway

What we have here is a pretty simple formula with a few effective pump-enhancers and some “might be effective” pump-enhancers.  Unfortunately, a few of the more important ingredients (like Citrulline Malate) are under-dosed relative to what has been used in studies, so users may need two servings to yield clinically effective doses.  At two servings, you’ll definitely get some nice pumps from this stuff though.

Is VasoSport Safe?

VasoSport is entirely safe, even if you take more than one serving at a time.  There are no stimulants in the formula which may cause negative side effects and all of the ingredients have been researched and deemed well-tolerated in humans.  The liklihood that VasoSport would cause any problems is extremely low.

The Bottom Line

VasoSport is capable of delivering the pumps it promises, but it’s not the most well-dosed formula.  Beyond that, it’s just not particularly exciting.  There are a few other pump-pre-workouts out there that are better, so it’s not that Vaso Sport isn’t a good products, it’s just that there’s no reason to choose it over several other similar products.
