Hydroxycut Platinum: An Evidence-Based Review

Hydroxycut Platinum is the latest version of Hydroxycut, a fat-burner by Iovate Health Sciences (parent company of MuscleTech, EPIQ, Hydroxycut, etc.).  In terms of ingredient profile, it’s pretty similar to various other Hydroxycut/Muscle-Tech fat-burners, though there are some slight differences…

Hydroxycut Platinum

Robusta Coffee(Chlorogenic Acid)

Robusta Coffee is an ingredient that MuscleTech/Hydroxycut has used in tons of products at this point.  It’s standardized for Chlorogenic Acid which research suggests reduces carbohydrate absorption, in a sense mimicking a low-carb diet.

Chlorogenic Acid (usually sold as Greeen Coffee Extract) exploded in popularity after Dr. Oz made a big deal about it on his show, touting some published scientific research which ended up being retracted due to structural flaws and industry influence.

There are still some studies demonstrating some benefits with Chlorogenic Acid, but it’s far less effective than some of the early research made it appear.  In the context of Hydroxycut Platinum, it’s not completely useless but doesn’t add too much to the overall efficacy of the formula.

Red Mango (Hydroxycitric Acid)

Red Mango contains Hydroxycitric Acid, the same compound found in Garcinia Cambogia, an extremely popular weight-loss ingredient at one time.  Hydroxycitric Acid allegedly blocks the enzyme ATP Citrate Lysase which is responsible for converting carbohydrates to fat.

Unfortunately, like Chlorogenic Acid, the benefits of Hydroxycitric Acid have been exaggerated quite signficantly by supplement companies and people like Dr. Oz.  Research indicates it is actually pretty ineffective in humans, likely due to the fact that ATP Citrate Lysase is less active in humans (compared to rodents).

In the context of Hydroxycut Platinum, Red Mango (Hydroxycitric Acid) is pretty useless.  That’s just the truth.

White Kidney Bean Extract

White Kidney Bean extract is yet another alleged carb-blocker, but research indicates it may actually work somewhat.  The important thing to keep in mind with these types of supplements is that they may mimick a slightly low-carb diet, but this won’t result in considerable weight-loss in the short-term.

Furthermore, Hydroxycut Platinum contains an undisclosed dose of White Kidney Bean and, based on a 358mg proprietary blend (200mg of which is Robusta Coffee), it would appear quite under-dosed.

Sensoril

Sensoril is a patented extract of Ashwagandha that has actually been shown to reduce stress, both physically (lower Cortisol) and mentally.  Stress can be associated with weight-gain, so in those individuals Ashwagandha may actually be effective.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that stress doesn’t affect us all in this way, so if you’re not stressed to the point that you’re gaining weight, Sensoril probably won’t do much for you.

Furthermore, Sensoril appears quite under-dosed in the Hydroxycut Platinum formula.

LactoSpore

LactoSpore is probiotic (live culture of Bacillus Coagulans) which may promote intestinal health, but probably won’t help you lose weight in the long run.  It’s certainly a good idea to keep some healthy bacteria in your gut, but unless you have some sort of pre-existing digestive condition, LactoSpore is not miracle ingredient.

Caffeine

Caffeine triggers the release of Noradrenaline, a potent fat-burning hormone that directly induces lipolysis (fat-breakdown) and can therefore be helpful for fat-loss.

The fat-loss benefits of Caffeine may be reduced over time though, since tolerance generally develops with continuous use, but in the context of Hydroxycut Platinum, Caffeine is actually one of the few ingredients that actaully does something.

Choline Bitartrate

Choline Bitartrate is generally considered the least bioavailable form of Choline but it’s popularity in fat-burning supplements has increased dramatically over the past few years after a lone pilot study showed that it helped athletes drop weight rapidly while maintaining strength.

Unfortunately, no further studies have confirmed these findings and, in all likliehood, the results are probably unrealistic.  There just isn’t a logical mechanism of action by which Choline Bitartrate could accomplish this.

Like most of the other ingredients in Hydroxycut Platinum, Choline Bitartrate is extremely under-dosed.

L-Theanine

Theanine is worth incorporating in any formula that also uses Caffeine because it has been shown to reduce the negative aspects of Caffeine (jitters, anxiety, etc.) while encouraging the positives (cognitive enhancement, focus, etc.).

We discuss this relationship in more depth here, but to make a long story short, we like seeing Theanine in any formula that also contains Caffeine.

Unfortunately, we don’t know how much Theanine is in Hydroxycut Platinum, and we’d guess it’s probably not a lot.

Huperzine A

Huperzine A is an Acetycholinesterase inhibitor, meaning it can indirectly increase Acetylcholine levels in the brain.  Acetylcholine, for those who don’t know, is a neurotransmitter heavily invovled in memory formation, attention, and muscle contraction.

It doens’t necessarily have any direct weight-loss implications, by Huperzine A may help the focus aspect of the Hydroxcut Platinum formula.

Superfruit Matrix

The Hydroxycut Platinum Superfruit Matrix consists of Cherry, Lemon, and Tangerine concentrates.  We’re not going to break these individual components down because the truth is they don’t matter.  This is just Hydroxycut capitalizing on the trend of “superfruits”, but in reality these ingredients are pretty useless.

Cherries, Lemons, and Tangerines aren’t going to help you lose weight.  Sorry!

Is Hydroxycut Platinum Safe?

Hydroxycut Platinum is certainly very safe, with the only stimulant being Caffeine, but this safety comes at the expense of efficacy.  Some additional stimulants wouldn’t hurt the safety profile but would greatly improve the effectiveness of the formula.

The Bottom Line

Hydroxycut Platinum is pretty disappointing.  Most of the ingredients are either ineffective or just under-dosed to the point where you would need three or four servings to acheive clinical doses.  The inclusion of probiotics in Hydroxycut Platinum seems more like a way to capitalize of “buzz” ingredients than an effective way to encourage weight-loss.

If you’re gullible and tend to fall for marketing hype, then Hydroxycut Platinum is designed for you!  But if you want to actually burn fat and lose weight, check out our best fat burners list for some fat-burners that actually work.
