Claims

The makers of Alpha GX-7 boast that it is the “most powerful pre-workout” on the market and they guarantee “immediate strength gains”.  Sounds great, right?  But does Alpha GX-7 actually have what it takes to back up such bold claims?  Let’s take a look at the ingredients and see…

Alpha GX-7 Ingredients

The ingredient profile of Alpha GX-7 is nothing new.  Every ingredient has also been used in tons of other pre-workout supplements.  The good news is that all the ingredients have also been studied and have well-established clinical ranges, making it easy to see where Alpha GX-7 lies in terms of efficacy.

BETA-ALANINE

Beta-Alanine is a precursor to the dipeptide Carnosine.  Carnosine functions as a Lactic Acid buffer in working muscle, effectively delaying muscular fatigue.  Higher muscular Carnosine concentrations are associated with improved muscular endurance and supplementation with Beta-Alanine is a highly reliable/effective means of increasing Carnosine in muscle tissue.

Most studies have used doses of Beta-Alanine ranging from 3-6g daily, but doses as low as 1.6g daily are still effective in the long run.  In some people, Beta-Alanine supplementation may cause a sensation known as Paresthesia.  Taking Beta-Alanine in small doses several times throughout the day is the best way to avoid Paresthesia.

Alpha GX-7 contains 2g of Beta-Alanine per serving, more than the lowest known effective dose, but still not the most effective dose.

Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate

Arginine is an amino acid which serves as a precursor to Nitric Oxide.  For this reason, it is generally included in pre-workout supplements as a means of enhancing blood flow and encouraging pumps.

Unfortunately, due to supplemental Arginine being rapidly degraded by the enzyme Arginase upon ingestion, it is pretty ineffective and entirely unreliable.

Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate is often alleged to be more bioavailable than other forms, but it too has failed to improve exercise performance in a clinical setting.

Alpha GX-7 Pre-Workout contains 1500mg of Arginine AKG.

Citrulline Malate

Citrulline is precursor to Arginine but is actually much more effective.  In a sense, Citrulline is what Arginine “should” be.  It has been shown to enhance muscular endurance and also has benefits pertaining to exercise recovery.

Citrulline Malate is the preferred form of Citrulline, having been used clinically to enhance muscular endurance and reduce muscle soreness.

Unfortunately, the 1.5g dose of Citrulline Malate found in Alpha GX-7 Pre-Workout is far less than the 6-9g used clinically, so the beenfits are far from a guarantee.

L-Carnitine

Carnitine is an amino acid with antioxidant properties.  These properties are what gives Carnitine it’s exercise recovery benefits.  Carnitine, in various forms, has been shown to reduce oxidative damage resulting from exercise and increase muscle oxygenaton.

Although increased muscle oxygenation may result in better performance in some, it’s not a guarantee.  As a recovery-aid, however, Carnitine is quite reliable so even though Alpha GX-7 isn’t a “recovery” supplements, that is how we prefer to think about Carnitine in the context of the formula.

Mucuna Pruriens

Mucuna Pruriens is generally standardized for L-Dopa, the direct precursor to Dopamine and Noradrenaline.  These two neurotransmitters are heavily involved in focus, motivation, and mood, so Mucuna Pruriens is often included in pre-workout supplements designed to acheive those ends.

Studies investigating any type of performance enhancement as a result of Mucuna Pruriens are non-existent, so we won’t comment there.  In reality, it probably doesn’t do much, but some marginal benefit can’t be ruled out.

Alpha GX-7 Pre-Workout contains 450mg of Mucuna Pruriens, standardized for 20% L-Dopa.

L-Taurine

Taurine is unique amino acid with anti-oxidant properties which make Taurine supplementation an effective means of enhancing exercise recovery.  Although Taurine has been shown to slightly enhance exercise performance, these effects are unreliable.  Some studies note benefit, others fail.

Alpha GX-7 Pre-Workout contains 400mg of Taurine per serving, much less than what can be considered a clinical dose.

Caffeine

Caffeine generally forms the basis for the energy/focus component of stimulant pre-workout supplements.  This is because it triggers the release of neurotransmitters such as Noradrenaline which induce a state of focus and perceived (mental) energy.

Alpha GX-7 contains 250mg of Caffeine, a moderate dose capable of providing energy and alertness in the average (non-caffeine using) person.

Theobromine

Theobromine is a chemical relative to Caffeine, belonging to the class of compounds known as Xanthines.  Unlike Caffeine, however, Theobromine is not psychoactive.  It is a cardiac stimulant, but isn’t going to provide “focus and energy” in the same way Caffeine does.

Yohimbine HCL

Yohimbine is a potent stimulant which happens to be an effective fat-burner, when dosed correctly.  Beyond facilitating fat-loss, Yohimbine may improve mood and perceived energy levels in some people via release of Adrenaline/Noradrenaline.

We discuss Yohimbine in much more depth, and evaluate the safety of it, in this article.

Alpha GX-7 Ingredient Takeaway

The ingredient profile is great, but the dosing of each individual ingredient leaves a lot to be desired.  Unfortunately, none of the physically effective performance enhancing ingredients in Alpha GX-7 are dosed clinically.  That is, they aren’t present in the amounts that have been used in the scientific studies in which they proved effective, so similar results are far from guaranteed.

At multiple servings, you may get clinically effective doses, but keep in mind the price per serving doubles if you double-dose every time you workout.

Is Alpha GX-7 Pre-Workout Safe?

Alpha GX-7 Pre-Workout does contain a few stimulants, most notably Caffeine and Yohimbine, the combination of which may be a bit intense for some individuals.  In others, it may be well-tolerated though so there is nothing inherently “dangerous” about either of these compounds.

The key is to start with a low dose to assess tolerance, then decide whether or not to increase it based on how you handle it.

Where To Buy Alpha GX-7

You won’t find Alpha GX-7 in any mainstream supplement retailers.  It’s only sold on Amazon.

The Bottom line

Alpha GX-7 Pre-Workout may increase focus and energy levels, but many of the non-stimulant performance enhancing ingredients are under-dosed.  So if energy/focus is your only concern, go for it!  If you’re looking for a more well-rounded pre-workout, however, check out our Top 10 Pre-Workout Supplements List!
