DICAFFEINE MALATE

Dicaffeine Malate is simply a combination of Caffeine and Malic Acid. While Creative Compounds, the manufacturer of Infinergy, claims a variety of additional benefits over what can be achieved with regular caffeine, there are no scientific studies to support these claims. Malic Acid plays a role in energy production, but supplementation has never been shown to increase energy in healthy individuals, so for now we would consider Dicaffeine Malate just another form of Caffeine.

THEACRINE

Theacrine is an alkaloid found almost exclusively in camellia assamica, also known as Kucha tea. In terms of its chemical structure, Theacrine (1,3,7,9-tetramethyluric acid) is very similar to Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine), so its physiological effects are alleged to be similar as well. Currently no human studies exist but there has been a small research conducted in rodents.

A 2012 study, published in “Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior”, found that injections of 24-48mg/kg of Theacrine increased locomotion in rats via the same signaling pathways as Caffeine. Perhaps the most interesting part of this particular study was the fact that chronic Theacrine administration did not result in any observable tolerance build-up, as is generally the case with Caffeine.

Although Theacrine and Caffeine have not been compared directly in the same study, this contrast is apparent when looking at a 2003 study from “Neuropsychopharmacology” in which seven days of Caffeine administration resulted in significant tolerance build-up in mice.

A 2014 pilot study, published in the “Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition“, found that a 200mg acute dose of Theacrine increased perceived energy in human subjects with a trend toward cognitive improvement, though this study did not attempt to measure fat-burning capacity.

Purus Labs has certainly established itself as a first mover when it comes to Theacrine, as this compound may end becoming quite pervasive in pre-workouts and fat-burners.

CAFFEINE

Caffeine tends to be the primary stimulant driving force behind most fat-burners because of its ability to release Noradrenaline, an inherently pro-lipolytic neurotransmitter. Although this mechanism can certainly burn fat in the short-term, prolonged Caffeine consumption (by itself) generally results in tolerance build-up so the effects become less potent over time. This was demonstrated in a 1992 study in which 24 weeks of Caffeine intake (200mg/day) failed to induce weight-loss in humans. For Caffeine to be an effective fat-loss agent, it generally must be combined with other stimulants or synergistic compounds.

TheaTrim contains 150mg of Caffeine per serving, a pretty standard dose, which may certainly potentiate the effects of Theacrine and Rauwolscine.

SAMe

S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAMe) is formed by combining the amino acid Methionine with ATP. Since SAMe serves as a methyl donor for a wide variety of bodily functions and reactions, it has an assortment of potential health implications. At this time, it’s unclear why exactly Purus Labs has included SAMe in the TheaTrim formula, especially since weight-loss is not very high up on the list of potential applications.

CITRUS BIOFLAVONOID COMPLEX

A variety of compounds (bioflavonoids) present in Citrus fruits have been identified as potential fat-burners, with Hesperidin being one of the most promising.

A 2008 study from “Phytotherapy Research” found that Hesperedin was able to stimulate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR) activity, in vitro. Stimulation of PPAR receptors is generally associated with the release of adiponectin, a protein involved in the breakdown of fat.

A later (2012) study noted that injections of Hesperedin in the stomachs of rats stimulated brown adipose tissue, generally indicative of an increase in metabolic rate. Although this study used injections, the dose used was within the practical limits of oral consumption.

TheaTrim contains 50mg of Hesperidin, a moderately effective dose, which may certainly contribute to the overall weight-loss potential of the formula.

WHITE WILLOW BARK (SALICIN)

White Willow Bark contains Salicin which, upon ingestion, is metabolized into Salicylic Acid, the same compound behind the analgesic/anti-inflammatory properties of Aspirin. While Salicin has no clear implications for weight-loss on its own, it has been shown to enhance the effects of Ephedrine (and Ephedrine-like compounds). The mechanism of action here is via inhibition of prostaglandins, hormone-like molecules which tend to normalize the metabolic effects of beta-agonists like Ephedrine, rendering them less effective.

Salicin/Salicylic Acid was shown to potentiate the effects of Ephedrine (in mice) in a 1987 study, published in “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition”, as well as a 1993 study from the “International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders”. However, TheaTrim contains just 20mg of Salicin per serving, considerably less than the amounts used in the above-mentioned studies.

RAUWOLSCINE

Rauwolfia vomitoria is generally standardized for Rauwolscine (also known as alpha-yohimbine) which is chemically related to Yohimbine and can fulfill basically the same function in the context of a fat-burner.

Like Yohimbine, Rauwolscine is an Alpha Receptor Antagonist, meaning it blocks the receptors responsible for blocking lipolysis. By blocking these receptors, Rauwolscine is able to potentiate the effects of other stimulant fat-burners and allow more fat-burning than would normally occur from exercise alone. However, since Rauwolscine generally appears alongside Yohimbine, it hasn’t been studied much in isolation, and an optimal (effective) dose has not yet been established.

TheaTrim contains 450mcg of Rauwolscine, a pretty low dose, but still capable of favorably impacting the overall efficacy of the formula.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Although we’ve come across Theacrine in other products such as VPX Sports’ MD2 Meltdown, Purus is the first to use the patented TeaCrine form which could eventually become quite pervasive (think CarnoSyn). Aside from Theacrine, the TheaTrim formula certainly has what it takes to shed some fat, while still maintaining a pretty solid safety profile (though it’s still quite possibly to overdo it so be careful with dosing).
