HYDROXYPROPYL DISTARCH PHOSPHATE:

Hydroxypropyl Distarch Phosphate is classified as a modified resistant starch, meaning it is a starch that cannot be digested in a normal human intestine. Resistant starched in general have been studied fairly extensively with regards to their effect on blood sugar, but research indicates they can also directly increase fat-oxidation.

A 2004 study, published in “Nutrition & Metabolism”, found that the addition of 5.4% resistant starch to the diets of healthy individuals significantly increase fat-oxidation post-meal. The researchers in the study concluded that resistant starch may contribute to weight-loss over time. Similar results were achieved in a 2011 study from the “British Journal of Nutrition” in which Hydroxypropyl Distarch Phosphate supplementation (as part of the diet) increased resting energy expenditure in human subjects.

Including hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate as a part of the overall diet certainly has implications for weight-loss, but the dose present in the Redline White Heat formula is not enough to convey the same benefits noted in the above mentioned studies. Ideally, those looking to gain the benefits associated with Hydroxypropyl Distarch Phosphate supplementation should replace some of the carbs in their current diet with Hydroxypropyl Distarch Phosphate, rather than supplement with extra Hydroxypropyl Distarch Phosphate.

CAFFEINE:

Caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world, and is a well-established ergogenic aid. Caffeine consumption causes an increase in Catecholamines (Adrenaline, Noradrenaline, and Dopamine), which tend to increase focus, concentration, and perceived energy while simultaneously promoting lipolysis. However, the weight loss effects of caffeine tend to fade with prolonged use, so it does not appear as though caffeine is a long-term effective fat burner. While caffeine’s weight loss potential is negligible, it increases focus and perceived energy in most people, which generally leads to more intense workouts (thus burning more fat), and may potentiate the action of other stimulants like yohimbine.

THEACRINE:

Theacrine is an alkaloid that is synthesized from caffeine in plants, and found along-side it in Kucha tea. Because of the chemical similarities it shares with caffeine, it has similar effects, as evidenced in a 2012 study in which Theacrine injections significantly increased locomotion in rats. Interestingly, the researchers in this study noted no trend toward tolerance even after 7 days, indicating the effects of Threanine remain potent longer than caffeine. Unfortunately, there are no human studies upon which to draw conclusions regarding any potential fat-burning effect of Theacrine, though it may potentiate the effects of other stimulants.

EVODIAMINE:

Evodiamine is a plant extract which appears to mimic the thermogenic effects of Capsaicin in rats. However, no human studies have been published at this time testing the effects of the extract on humans. Due to the lack of human studies available, we cannot determine with any considerable degree of certainty, the efficacy of Evodiamine.

N-METHYL-TYRAMINE:

Tyramine is a derivative of the amino acid Tyrosine which is thought to act as a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI), meaning it blocks the enzyme (Monoamine Oxidase) responsible for the breakdown of certain neurotransmitter (Noradrenaline, Adrenaline, Dopamine, etc.). The result is an increase in levels of these neurotransmitters which can induce a state of increased alertness, focus, and perceived energy. Human research on Tyramine is somewhat scarce and the combined effect of the Tyramine and the other stimulants present in the formula has not been the subject of any published study. However, given its mechanism of action, it stands to reason that Tyramine can synergistically enhance the effects of the catecholamine-releasing agents in the Redline White Heat formula.

YOHIMBE BARK EXTRACT (YOHIMBINE):

The primary active component of Yohimbe Bark is Yohimbine. As mentioned above, Yohimbine acts as an alpha-2 receptor antagonist, meaning it inhibits the receptor responsible for blocking lipolysis. By blocking the action of this receptor Yohimbine allows for more lipolysis to occur than would normally be permitted by the alpha-adrenergic receptors. A 2006 study showed that while there were no increases in strength, supplementation induced fat loss in athletes (soccer players). While Yohimbine acts directly on alpha-2 receptors, its capacity for lipolysis may be further magnified by its ability to increase the catecholamine neurotransmitters adrenaline and noradrenaline which in turn induce lipolysis. By doing so, Yohimbine both induces lipolysis directly, while simultaneously preventing its inhibition. However, its ability to increase catecholamines may degrade fairly quickly (a few weeks), so for Yohimbine to be truly effective as a weight-loss agent, it must be combined with something that activates the beta-adrenergic receptors in the first place (i.e. caffeine and other stimulants or exercise).

THE BOTTOM LINE:

Redline White Heat can certainly be classified as stimulant-based, although it does contain some non-stimulant ingredients (HDP and HBCD) aimed at providing the body with “real” energy as opposed to strictly perceived energy from stimulants. Although Redline White Heat is positioned as a pre-workout, most of the ingredients have clear fat-loss implications, which may be of particular interest to those looking to burn some fat as well. At about 75 cents per serving, Redline White Heat is more or less appropriately priced and would likely appeal to those pre-workout users who seek intense mental stimulation as opposed to the physical benefits generally associated with such pre-workout ingredients as Beta-Alanine, Creatine, Citrulline, etc.
